Whats an exceptable amount of can dentage?
OK, just got another UPS order from walton feed. It seems the jerks at UPS tossed the boxes all over the place again and left big dents in the rims about 6 cans, out of 18 cans total. The last time this happened I contacted Walton feed and they promptly sent out new cans for each dented one. They were really nice about it and didn't even ask for the origional cans back (it probably would have costed more to ship then they were worth since it was rice and beans.) Now it happened again but I feel bad contacting them this time since I know its not their fault (or maybe it is since they dont double box like emergency essentials or mredepot?). On the otherhand I don't want to rely on these cans to be airtight long term so I will probably end up packing them in mylar with O2 absorbers, which is an extra expense.
Does anyone know if cans with dents in the rim about a quarter to a half inch deep will ruin the seal integrity? Is that considered acceptable or would you return them? |

That's a bummer.....I've never had anything damaged by UPS, but this last order of truck freight from Walton, the trucking firm had a wreck and I ended up with damaged and missing stuff I'm still trying to settle on.....
As long as the seal isn't damaged, I wouldn't sweat it.....a dent shouldn't affect the seal if it already hasn't. |

FYI, food companies knowingly ship out cans with dents if they are deemed irrelevant to the integrity of the can. Of course, their judgment on the matter is not always foolproof.
Of course, damage can and does take place in the delivery process as well. You are normally going to be able to tell if the damage occurred in shipment based on the condition of the shipping container. (Often times, you need to take pictures of the damaged box if the shipping company is to be held responsible.) Serious dents around the rims of the cans are probably not going to hold a seal very well. I would contact the company to let them know of your concerns and send them pictures. |
